Looking Back: First Year Seniors in 2013

You can find a list of New Seniors here (or in the links just below the header image!). With the start of 2014, will come a new league of seniors for us to be excited for. Let's take a look back at the athletes that joined the senior ranks in 2013.

Sophie Scheder
There is a new bar dynasty in Germany! Elizabeth Seitz and Kim Bui have reigned supreme as the 1-2 dynamic duo for Germany on bars but also in the all around. Recently, these 2 lost their title at the German Championships to a new duo of Sophie Scheder and Lisa Katherina Hill. Scheder earned the German title on the uneven bars, finished 4th in the uneven bar finals at the European Championships, and 5th in the bar final at the 2013 World Championships. She's so tall and manages to use the Code of Points to her advantage with Shaposhnikova transitions along with many in-bar stalders. Here she is scoring a 15.2 at the Stuttgart Team Challenge.

Angel Romaeo
After much success as a junior, Romaeo didn't have quite the senior debut she was hoping for. She had trouble on both bars and beam - scoring only in the 11s - and finishing in 12th in the all around final. Her floor exercise, however, is remarkable and she earned 5th in the apparatus finals. Romaeo hasn't quite made it to the top tier of competitive British gymnasts as she has not made the European or World Championship team. Hopefully, she will surprise us in the coming year.

"Mini" was part of the Italian team for the 2013 European Championships where she had an excellent showing as a first year senior. She qualified to the all around final and finished 7th with a 55.199. She also qualified to the balance beam final, beating out veteran Vanessa Ferrari. She finished the final in 7th. Unfortunately, Italy insisted on leaving Mini home with hopes of her returning to training and improving her D score. We haven't seen much of her in the second half of this year, so hopefully we get to see more of her in 2014. She's a good all arounder and may be able to fill a bars deficit that Italy has (along with Giorgia Campana who is recovering from an elbow injury).

If you asked gymnastics fans to make a US Olympic Team regardless of age limit, Lexie often crept onto the team showing the strength and success she had as a junior. In 2013, as a first year senior, she had a chance of making the team but was bitten by the injury bug during US Nationals where she tore her Achilles. Lexie had many upgrades planned for 2013 including the addition of a 2nd vault which never came to fruition. Due to injury, Lexie was not eligible to make the World Championship team. She is now recovering from an ankle injury and cellulitis which landed her in the hospital. Hopefully, we get to see this routine on a World Championship stage.
