Gymnastics Injuries Nov 2013
Chantysha Netteb (NED) tore her ACL at the 2013 World Championships
source: trouw.nl
There seemed to be a lot of injuries in the lead up to Worlds. I figure I'd start to keep track of athletes that are injured and when they've returned to competition. I'll update this again at the end of December/early January, so feel free to give input on who has what injuries and whether or not they had surgery for it. This list will only include injuries that the gymnasts or their federation have reported.

Nadine Jarosch had an ACL tear at podium training for German championships.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Corrected it! Do you know if she had surgery to repair it as well?
Deleteyes she did have surgery a while ago
DeleteThanks!
DeleteKristian Thomas had a leg injury at the French International in the spring (I think it was a small fracture?) but obviously returned to competition just before Worlds at the Westminster Cup. There were also the Russian men's small injury issues at Worlds (Kuksenkov finger and Belyavskiy ... something).
ReplyDeleterumor is that Vega now has a dislocated kneecap
ReplyDeleteWhy posting this if it's only rumour ?
DeleteChris Brooks had thumb surgery to repair a torn ligament not knee surgery.
ReplyDeleteThanks, corrected it!
DeleteMaria Paseka back pain. Tatiana Nabieva concussion.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I wasn't going to include Nabieva at first but then figured it would be interesting to keep track of concussions in gymnastics since that's the hot topic right now. Thanks for the reminder!
DeleteSo do women have more injuries in general than the men or are they reported more often because the WAG fan following is greater?
ReplyDeleteI think it's multiple things.
Delete1. Yes, WAG fan following is greater. There are more reporters/blogs interviewing the gymnasts and finding out about these injuries sooner.
2. In the US, not sure of other countries, there are more female gymnasts than male gymnasts. So, for all we know, proportionally, this could be the same.
3. The average age is changing in WAG. I don't know the average age in MAG but I feel like it's not as shocking to continue competing in your mid-20s. I think coaches of male gymnasts/male gymnasts are prepared to handle this. Men peak later so I'm curious if that concept of "training an older gymnast smarter" is not new for MAG in the same way it is for WAG.
4. #1 made me think - as far as reporting and blogging, a lot of the information we get is constant in the US where WAG is popular. Maybe in those countries with a better MAG team, the media involvement just isn't there yet. For example, I've read multiple articles on Elsa Garcia but not many on Daniel Coral. I'm sure they exist but maybe it's just not shared as widely. I've heard things about the French women's national team but don't really hear much about the men. Hmm... [I'm also not a MAG blog so I'm already biased there. I'm trying to learn, honest!]
Just my quick thoughts right now but an interesting question!
anastasia grishina was a pinched nerve, if you want specifics :)
ReplyDeleteI added that. Thank you!
DeleteIordache had or still has spinal disk herniation. She hardly trained before Worlds.
ReplyDeleteYouna Dufournet was injured in 2010, more than 3 years ago ! Since then she competed in many major events, including the Olympics in 2012, and she is actually perfectly fine.
ReplyDeleteShe made a gymnastics break last season because of her studies, but she plans to come back to competition next year.
Yes, she's back training now! I included her because she had another surgery this year and is finally feeling closer to normal. Hope to see her in competition soon.
DeleteLisa Top dislocated her elbow. Yvette Moshage tore her ACL for the third time.
ReplyDeleteLou Nina had an elbow injury, but I'm not sure what exactly. Luo Peiru fractured her kneecap and injured her achilles.
Thank you! For some reason I thought it was lower body like ankle for Top but thank you for the clarification. I keep looking for Luo Peiru and I guess that's why she's been out of competition for a while. Do you know which came first or if they were at the same time? I'm just wondering if I should put her with the knee group or Achilles group.
DeleteBoth injuries happened at the same time, while training vault. I have a feeling she won't be able to bounce back, but we'll see. :(
DeleteChantysha Netteb also tore her meniscus but it's mainly the ACL.
Tsurumi had an ankle injury and Shelgunova elbow and a recurring back issue btw.
Delete*Thanks to C.
Marine Brevet : Torn achilles tendon - surgery
ReplyDeleteAnne Kuhm : Elbow, crack radial head and cartilage
Thank you! I hope Team France can be healthy now and move forward. Kuhm's sounds so painful :O (well, they all do)
DeleteAdriana Crisci ITA Lesion of the ACL while performing a DTY
ReplyDeleteHow could I forget that one?! Thank you! I remember reading an article where she said something along the lines of, "Don't worry. I'll be back with an Amanar." Hope she still has that fighting spirit!
DeleteChantysha Netteb had a surgery of her ACL last week
ReplyDeleteMaddie Desch had a torn meniscus but not sure if she had surgery :)
ReplyDeleteACL injuries or athletes who we feel are at a high risk for any knee injury, we try to incorporate specific plyometric exercises and sports specific agility drills into their therapy. I feel maintaining a good quadriceps to hamstring ratio is the best way to ensure a safe return to sports as well as preventing further injury.
